Topic-1: What was he – his study – his life – his teaching career 

   Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan was not only a great teacher but also a great philosopher and statesman. He was born in Sarvapalli village in Tamil Nadu. His father Biraswami was a poor priest. Radhakrishnan had his education at a mission school and at the Christian College in Madras. He was very much impressed by Swami Vivekananda’s speech on Hinduism. He read the Vedas, the Gita and other ancient books of Hinduism.

   After his education, he became a lecturer in philosophy at Madras Presidency College. He had a vast knowledge of Sanskrit and English. He contributed articles to the journals in India and abroad. He got his Doctorate in philosophy. He became the head of the department of philosophy of Mysore University in 1918. He wrote books in English. He got an offer to join Calcutta University which was the center of a lot of scholarly persons of the time.

Topic-2: His role as an ambassador – his role as Vice-President and president of India 

   Dr. Radhakrishnan was good at Eastern and Western philosophy. He had been to various universities of the world to deliver lectures. He was appointed as the first Asiatic visiting professor to Oxford University. After independence, he was sent as an ambassador to the U.S.S.R. In 1949. In 1952 on the eve of his leaving U.S.S.R. to become the Vice-President of India, Stalin said, “Radhakrishnan is not a narrow patriot. His heart bleeds for suffering humanity .” He visited various countries and explained India’s foreign policy. He became the President of India in 1962. He always emphasized on disarmament and peaceful co-operation, and the truth is the inner voice of each religion; so, people should not fight in the name of religion.

Topic-3: His birthday as Teachers’ Day –

   Dr. Radhakrishnan was a Karmayogi. He kept himself busy with work all his life. He was given “Bharat Ratna”. His birthday is observed as the Teachers’ Day all over India.

Topic-4: His death –

   He breathed his last on 17th April 1975.
